What is Ayurveda?
Ayurveda is considered to be the oldest healing science in the world, and in Sanskrit, the word Ayurveda literally translates to “The Science of Life”.
Originating in India almost 5,000 years ago, it stems from the Vedic culture and the roots of it’s wisdom have been passed down over the past few thousand years.
Ayurveda uses a range of techniques to treat illness and encourage wellbeing. It is an overarching philosophy with an emphasis on maintaining balance for health and harmony.
The focus of Ayurvedic treatment is to:
support the body in removing toxins
reduce stress
increase immunity
reduce symptoms
create more harmony and balance in life
Ayurveda places great emphasis on prevention and encourages the individual to seek inner balance through understanding their individual constitution (known as a dosha).
Ayurvedic medicine is based on the concept that the world is made up of five elements- space, water, earth, fire and air. A combination of these elements makes up the three dosha, known as vata, pitta and kapha. Every person has a unique ratio, which defines their Ayurvedic constitution and are responsible for a persons physical, mental and emotional heath. Maintaining balance within the doshas is key to wellbeing.
Ayurvedic treatment may include:
dosha-specific diet
herbal and plant medicines
internal cleansing (purification)
yoga therapy
massage therapy
meditation
